Adam Waring has been obsessed with the Ninja Warrior obstacle course television programs for at least a decade… so much that he and his wife have travelled to the United States to train with expert Ninja Warriors to take those skills back to Australia where the latest franchise is set to air on Channel 9 mid 2017. He’s now included everything he’s learnt on his website Australian Ninja Warrior.
Why so obsessed Adam?
They are just such amazing programmes. I don’t think there has ever been a single episode from any country (there are now 18 countries each with their own Ninja Warrior obstacle courses) where I haven’t completely and absolutely wanted the athletes to succeed. As a viewer I feel like I’m right alongside them… feeling their triumphs and gutting disappointments.
You’ve now started training to compete on Australian Ninja Warrior, how hard is the training?
It is so so so hard. As a competitor, you’ll never know what obstacles you’ll need to tackle… so you have to train everything. I’ve come at this fairly late in life, which no real sporting background, so I really have had to start from scratch… and try my best to get good enough in everything.
What sort of skills do you need for Ninja Warrior?
The big one is grip strength… you need to be able to hang off things, swing, position your body and propel yourself through the air. You also need balance and overall strength. I’ve done a couple of practice competitions and I always seem to fall on the balance obstacles, so a lot of work still to happen there.
Where can we follow your journey?
