What you need to know about Breast Augmentation

One of the most popular and frequently performed aesthetic surgery procedures, breast augmentation has a long and successful track record in satisfying women who wish to enhance, regain or restore balance to their figures. By 1990s, over 1 million women had undergone breast augmentation in the US.

Today, over 290,000 breast augmentation procedures are performed every year. Seeing the spike in the demand for breast augmentation, I caught up with Udit Verma, the founder of MedHalt, a medical tourism provider, to know more about this cosmetic procedure. Here’s what Udit told us-

Why does everyone want a breast implant? What does it do?

Breast augmentation is a surgery which increases or restores the breast size. Changes in the shape or size of the breasts that occurred following pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss can also be corrected.

How is it performed?

In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision, lifts the breast tissue, creates a pocket in the breast area and places an implant in the pocket. A person has the option of getting a silicone gel implant or a saline implant.

Saline-filled breast implants consist of sterile salt water and is approved for women only above the age 18 or older. Silicone-filled breast implants are filled with soft, elastic gel and a woman has to be 22 years or older to undergo this procedure.

You should also know, that these implants, if placed behind the muscle, instead of the top of the breast can create a more realistic look and less scarring around the breast area.

The entire procedure generally takes 1-3 hours and the patient will probably have to stay overnight in the hospital.

The cost of this surgery typically ranges from $5,000-$10,000. Compare breast augmentation procedure costs with MedHalt.

Risks with the procedure

Breast pain, changes in sensation of the nipple and breast, hardening in the area around the implant, bleeding, infection or asymmetry in the size of breasts can happen after a breast augmentation surgery. To be safe, it’s a good idea to know all the possible complications of the procedure beforehand.

Post-operative care after surgery

  • It is essential to wear compression garments and take pain medication after the surgery.
  • Patients should avoid intense workout for around 6 weeks to avoid chances of rupture. Even though these ruptures do not lead to any systemic diseases, the FDA recommends women to undergo an MRI, 3 years after a breast augmentation procedure to detect any leakages in the implant.

Apart from this, it’s good to try and slowly adapt to the change in the heaviness of your breasts. Avoiding walking for long hours and driving is sure to help.
We hope with this, you are prepared for your breast augmentation surgery!
