21. Xochimilco

Distance from Mexico City: About 1 hour.

My absolute favorite of all the day trips from Mexico City is Xochimilco, a  UNESCO World Heritage Site. Xochimilco is a borough of Mexico City known for its canals, chinampas (floating gardens), and mariachi bands.

The name Xochimilco comes from the Nahuatl words xōchitl, meaning “flower”, and milli, meaning “field.” Xochimilco was founded by the Aztecs in the 14th century. The Aztecs used the canals to transport goods and people and to grow crops on the chinampas.

After the Spanish conquest of Mexico, Xochimilco remained an important agricultural area. The canals were also used for transportation and recreation.

In the 20th century, Xochimilco became a popular tourist destination. Visitors can take boat rides on the canals, visit the chinampas, and listen to mariachi music.

Xochimilco is largely dog-friendly, so if you’re traveling with your dog, this is a great destination.

Here are some of the things you can do in Xochimilco:

  • Take a boat ride on the canals: This is the most popular activity in Xochimilco. You can rent a trajinera, a colorful gondola-like boat, and take a ride through the canals.
  • Visit the chinampas: These floating gardens are a unique feature of Xochimilco. They are used to grow flowers, vegetables, and fruits.
  • Listen to mariachi music: Mariachi bands are a common sight in Xochimilco. They play traditional Mexican music and are a great way to experience Mexican culture.
  • Shop at the Xochimilco Flower Market: This market is a great place to buy flowers, plants, and souvenirs.
  • Visit Iglesia de San Bernardino: This historic church has stunning architecture that reflects the fusion of indigenous and colonial influences.
